Dead Fish Found In Pond Due To Bread Krathongs, Raises Environmental Concerns

2-12-2023 (BANGKOK) Pornphrom Vikitsreth, adviser to the Bangkok governor, recently took to Facebook to share disturbing images of piles of dead fish in Santiphap Park. According to Pornphrom, the fish died as a result of bread krathongs being floated on a pond during the Loy Krathong festival in Bangkok.

Out of the 6,810 krathongs collected at the park after Monday’s festival, a staggering 4,000 were made of bread. The bread krathongs sank in the water, causing pollution and ultimately leading to the demise of “almost all the fish in the pond,” explained Pornphrom.

Complaints from visitors about the deteriorating water quality prompted park authorities to take action. They collected the dead fish and replaced the water in the pond, addressing the immediate aftermath of this unfortunate incident.

Pornphrom emphasized that this incident serves as evidence that bread krathongs are not environmentally friendly and pose a significant threat to nature. Shockingly, approximately half of the krathongs collected in Bangkok after the Loy Krathong festivals this year were made of bread, as revealed by Pornphrom.

At Benchakitti Park, 2,500 out of 5,790 krathongs were made of bread, while at Nong Chok Park, the figure stood at 800 out of 1,544.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported an increase in the number of krathongs collected from city waterways after Monday’s festival. A total of 639,828 krathongs were collected, marking an 11% rise from the previous year. Among these, a vast majority (618,951) were made of natural materials, while 20,877 were constructed using plastic foam.
