Some statements were made by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejoecha, cautioned that a new minimum wage should not result in significant job losses, particularly in the private sector, which employs most of the workforce. She emphasized that the strike is not beneficial to the country, especially with ongoing negotiations.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) decided to strike due to the lack of agreement on a new minimum wage.

Onyejoecha highlighted the government’s commitment to the negotiations and outlined their proposals, including a wage increase to N60,000 for federal workers, the introduction of CNG-fueled buses, and improved financial access for MSMEs. Additionally, the government has pledged investments in critical sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, education, and healthcare.

The government’s balanced approach aims to protect the interests of both workers and the economy, ensuring sustainable economic progress.
